"Leading scientists say that the recent controversies surrounding climate research have damaged the image of science as a whole.

President of the US National Academy of Sciences, Ralph Cicerone, said scandals including the "climategate" e-mail row had eroded public trust in scientists. "

Sad but true. The "Post-normal" science of climate change has done huge damage to the image of science as a whole.

'People expect us to do things more in the public light and we just have to get used to that,' he said. 'Just as science itself improves and self-corrects, I think our processes have to improve and self-correct.'

So, not only do you have to research topics which please your sponsors and peers, and achieve conclusions which will result in further grants for more research, you now have to actually show your empirical data and 'value-added' calculations/massaging. Which is apparently what happened here:

("2009 paper confirming IPCC sea level conclusions withdrawn, mistakes cited")

Goodness - maybe there is a little hope for the science after all. Vive l'internet!
