From the BBC

"New York City officials have agreed to pay up to $657.5m (£437m) to thousands of rescue and clean-up workers at the Ground Zero site of the 9/11 attacks.

The settlement would compensate more than 10,000 plaintiffs who say they were made sick by dust from the collapsed World Trade Center towers"

Two thousand or so citizens die in the 9/11 attacks, and people are claiming for "dust injury"?

What is wrong with us?

As I understand it, Andy, the World Trade Center had a lot of asbestos coating the steel superstructure as a fire retardant. There was some controversy surrounding the use of asbestos in the construction at a time when it was known to be hazardous. They stopped using it from the 40th floor upwards (North Tower). The dust from the collapse (or demolition) contained pulverised cement, glass, steel and asbestos. There have been over 10,000 legal suits filed against insurance companies, with only 6 payouts. These claimants have suffered terrible respiratory illnesses (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/5235444.stm). I don't see their struggle in any way devalues the tragedy of 9/11. In fact some of those who died from respiratory illness have been added to the list of 9/11 victims.

Fair enough Mike, worthwhile remarks.

I guess I was jumping to conclusions
