According to The Press, the collapse of the East Face of New Zealand's highest mountain, Mt Cook  in 1991 was caused by "Global Warming"

If it's in the Press, it must be true!

And of course, when one says "Warmer temperatures may have caused..." it is a true statement. One could also say a feral Thar fart caused...., or another damn lost German tourist caused....

The trouble is though that those two won't sell newspapers. Somehow impart the fear that all our mountains will fall down as temperatures rise and you have a story! And, so the 'international team of researchers' get an all-expenses-paid trip around the world and probably significant research grants for their universities. Life is great if you can in any way link your research to the dreaded Global Warming.
