While the idea seems a little wacky, I am a kite-surfer myself, and I know the name Peter Lynn, the legendary kite maker from New Zealand.

So the linking of Lynn with Makani, the California based and Google-backed kite power company was interesting.

There is another company, KiteGen, based in Italy doing some similar work.

The numbers in Cringley's article are hard to believe: that only 10,000 kites are required to power the entire USA, but it is an interesting idea and would deal with a lot of the issues of terrestrial wind energy (such as unreliability, land use, bird strike, etc)
